The purpose of this manual is to help softball teams become more mentally strong. That is not to say that it will guarantee you more wins. What it will give you and your team is a greater satisfaction in your sport, more motivation to work hard and a better understanding of yourselves as athletes, coaches and people. Though this manual is designed for teams, it can also be easily used for individuals.I call the most important mental strengths the 7 C's: Competitive, Committed, Confident, Composed, in Control, Courageous and Consistent. Athletes will begin by taking an assessment to see where they currently stand with these strengths. Each mental strength is paired with a mental skill. These skills will help athletes PREPARE to be as strong mentally as they are physically. Athletes will learn how to focus on Process Over Outcome, get motivated and take action with Resonance and Goals, use imagery to Envision Success, find and maintain their Peak Energy Level, gain Attention Control, bounce back from failure and Reframe Positively, and finally create and maintain an Everyday Routine. Finally, there are more team building activities should you want to do more with your team.Each section is laid out in a format that reflects what athletes are used to. There is a game plan, which is a checklist of what to do for that section. A story or anecdote demonstrating the mental strength is used as a warm-up. Just as a drill is explained before the coach runs it, the theory behind the skill to be taught is included. Once the athletes know what to expect, it's drill time. This drill will help them practice the skill and also bond more as a team. Finally, the athletes have to prove what they've learned, just like game day. They will test how well they use the skill on the softball field. After they have practiced, the team should reflect on how well they did or what they still want to work on.Each athlete and coach will get something different out of this manual. If you're open to learning and change, there is much room for improvement in your performance!The purpose of this manual is to help softball teams become more mentally strong.
