Finding a vacant parking space is a growing problem in most urban areas. This thesis considers a centralized vehicle detection and monitoring system using Wireless Sensor networks that can intelligently guide the traffic to vacant parking spots. The main contribution of this work is the design and experimental evaluation of a cost-effective engineering solution for vehicle detection, which is a key requirement for the proposed parking space detection system. The proposed detection scheme was designed using off-the-shelf MICA2 sensor nodes equipped with a 2-axis magnetometer. Performance evaluations of the proposed algorithm are conducted using real life data and analyzed using MATLAB. Results indicate that the proposed detection algorithm can effectively detect a wide range of passing vehicles with small error probability. This detection scheme was ported on MICA2 sensor nodes and test beds were developed to test the proposed vehicle detection algorithm in real time for detecting the vehicles in different locations of a parking lot in University of North Carolina at Charlotte.The main contribution of this work is the design and experimental evaluation of a cost-effective engineering solution for vehicle detection, which is a key requirement for the proposed parking space detection system.
